Meghalaya: UDP to propose ‘common candidate’ for Shillong LS seat; Jemino in the race

The United Democratic Party (UDP) during its State Executive Committee (SEC) today decided to propose a common candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat before the MDA partners.

The party is likely to propose the name of party general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.

While talking to reporters after the meeting, Mawthoh  hinted that he would like to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha poll even though he did not give his confirmation on whether the party leaders has arrived to a consensus decision to propose his name as the common candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.

Stating that if NPP will want to contest the Tura Parliamentary seat, he said that being major partners in the coalition, the UDP should be given the opportunity to propose the common candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile, Mawthoh said that the meeting also discussed about the upcoming 2019 MDC elections in the state.

According to Mawthoh, the first list of the candidates for MDC polls will be released on October 16  and the entire process would be over by October 31  and all the constituency units have been asked to send the names of recommended candidates before October 31.

Furthermore, the party has also urged its party workers to attend the rally which will be organised by Khasi Authors' Society on Saturday seeking inclusion of Khasi language in the eighth schedule of the constitution.

It was also informed that the next CEC of the party will be held in either Dainadubi or Rongjeng in Garo Hills.

Meanwhile, talking about the resignation of Dr DD Lapang from the congress, the UDP general secretary said that it is a big loss for the Congress which only shows that all is not well with the Grand Old Party. He also said that the State Congress is in a downward slide and it is the time for the UDP to make the most of it.
