TURA: According to sources, one David SR Marak, in-charge of Jengjal police outpost under West Garo Hills district, has been suspended for his involvement in the molestation of a minor.
Marak has also been accused of beating up Taposh Sangma, who was with the victim when they were stopped by the IC and his team.
An FIR case was file against Marak at Tura police station on assault and molestation cases. According to the FIR, Marak allegedly stopped the motorcycle they were traveling in (Taposh Sangma and the minor girl) near Waribokgre, a few km from Jengjal village at about 7.30 pm when they were on their way to visit a relative's house.
Marak allegedly charged Taposh of being a Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadre and also accused him of being a pimp, "I was abused and called a pimp before they started beating me up. I was hit on my arms and legs. I panicked and ran away. All the policemen were in an inebriated state," said Taposh.
Meanwhile, the minor girl was then taken to the police station after the incident at around 8.30 pm at night, "I was taken to the outpost and asked to wait in the chamber of the IC for more than an hour", said the minor. Adding that the Marak, "Started acting strange, put off the candle and started molesting me. I was later dropped at my house late that night but I did not have the guts to reveal what happened to my parents."
The minor later informed her parents about the incident who then informed various NGOs of the village.
Jaynie Sangma, an activist said, "Policemen need to uphold the law and not break it."
West Garo Hills SP Mukesh Singh confirmed the suspension of the Jengjal IC saying that, "The matter is being investigated."
From the description given by Taposh on the incident, Marak and his team may have been under the influence of heavy drinking that specific evening.
