SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills Police on Monday apprehended three hardcore criminals from Dangar-Mawsynram road, East Khasi Hills while they were on the run after robbing one Darishda Rapthap (46) of money amounting to Rs 30,000 at gunpoint at her residence at Phlangwanboi, East Khasi Hills on Monday evening.
According to the police, four persons came in a local taxi ML 05 D 3288 on Monday from Shillong towards Mawsynram and at Phlangwanboi, they entered the house of Rapthap at around 8pm and looted around Rs 30,000 from her at gunpoint and later fled towards Dangar.
Soon after the matter was informed to the police, police personnel of Mawsynram Police station led by the officer of incharge, Sunil Kataria moved towards Dangar and instructed incharge of Dangar, Sub Inspector JB Tongwah to conduct vehicle checking on Dangar-Mawsynram road.
"Between 9-10 pm, the Dangar police intercepted the local taxi at Pomblang which falls under Dangar outpost," EKH SP City Vivek Syiem said here on Tuesday adding that three persons were apprehended while the fourth one managed to escape towards the jungle as soon as he saw the police party.
The arrested persons have been identified as Pynshai Rani, Barabor Namsaw and Raj Jamatia and the escaped person was identified as Synshar Thongni.
One 9mm pistol along with 1 magazine and four 9mm rounds, cash of Rs 6666 were seized from their possession and the rest of the money was with the escaped person, Thongni.
"The police effort to nab the culprits was successful due to the immediate information fed by the public to the police," Syiem said.
The SP city also informed that all four persons have been arrested before in several cases of robbery and theft and are hardcore criminals. Pynshai Rani alias Pynshai Kharbani have been arrested in previous 21 cases. He was booked twice under Meghalaya Prevention Detention Act (MPDA) twice.
Syiem also informed that the escaped criminal identified as Synsharlang Thongni is an ex-HNLC member and was arrested earlier for murder and robbery. He was also arrested in Mawkyrwat in 2014 for helping the banned militant outfit, HNLC in their activities. He was also involved in the Jailbreak case in 2009 and was nabbed by the police in Jaintia Hills. "We are putting all efforts to catch this hardcore criminal," Syiem said.
Reacting to a query, Syiem said that as compared to the previous years, the cases of robbery at gun point have come down in Shillong and most of the cases involving arms fall outside the purview of Shillong.
The SP city said that a case has been registered in this regard under section 392/566 for robbery and section 25 of the Arms Act.
