Meghalaya: Shillong Lajong U-12 lone Indian club to take part in BRICS tournament in China

 |

SHILLONG, August 14: In a boost to the Northeast, Shillong based club Shillong Lajong is the lone club in the country to participate in the BRICS football tournament to be held in China.

The tournament for U-12 players has players from all over the state of Meghalaya.

Apart from India, the other BRICS nations have multiple clubs participating in the tournament. Last year India had hosted the first U-17 BRICS tournament in Goa. The push on football shows the strengthening of ties between the nations. It also signifies the focus on grassroots football and with Shillong Lajong Academy being the only Indian side to take part in the tournament; it is encouraging for football in Meghalaya as taking part in such global competitions will help develop a competitive mentality.

A lot has been written on how the U-17 coach Luís Norton de Matos and the Indian senior team's coach Stephen Constantine lamented on how the players had very little competitive experience which is a cause of concern; but with tournaments such as this budding, this will greatly help enhance Indian football.
