Meghalaya Police on alert after HNLC’s bomb threats

SHILLONG: Not taking the threats of banned militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) lightly, the Meghalaya Police is alert to thwart attempts of the outfit to disturb peace in the state.

The HNLC threatened to make the office of the Congress its next target of attack.

Speaking in a meeting, the SP of East Khasi Hills, M Kharkhrang notified that the Police was on its toes and is currently working to gather inputs regarding the movement and activities of HNLC.

Meanwhile, the HNLC, in a release stated that it would not harm the public by carrying out explosions in the city but their aim was rather to "make the State Police machinery taste IEDs".

Kharkhrang also stated that the strength of HNLC was not a major concern here since not many individuals are needed to carry out its sinister activities in the city but rather just a few as evident by the blasts that took place in Jhalupara last year.

It may be mentioned here that HNLC had earlier threatened to resort to violence after the State government failed to respond to its willingness to hold talks. They also mentioned that they would blow up the High Court of Meghalaya and the State Secretariat in a joint operation with ULFA.
