SHILLONG | April 9, 2020:

In the fight against the pandemic COVID-19, the Meghalaya police have managed to come up with self-made protective pieces of equipment like PPE's, masks and even establishing isolation centres in various police battalions across the State.

This initiative of the Meghalaya Police is commendable since there is a shortage of medical equipment like PPE's and masks across the country.

Additional Inspector General of Police (Administration) GK. Iangrai, during the visit to the isolation centre set up at the MLP Ist Battalion at Mawlai Mawiong yesterday, said the police have set up 13 bedded men and women isolation ward and the staff are equipped with self-made protective equipment. The State police have also used all the available resources under its kitty by using tyres as a platform for water tanks to makeshift tents.

Giving an inside into the initiative taken by the Meghalaya Police, Iangrai said that the concept is similar to the arrangements made in other units as the DGP had instructed all the commandants to have similar arrangements in their respective units and this is just a part of the fight against COVID-19.

He further informed that as of now the first battalion has made this isolation wards within four days and all of them have been briefed about the do's and don'ts and strict discipline which requires to be maintained. According to him, this is just an isolation ward for those who will be coming back to duty after lockdown and anyone with symptoms will be put under isolation.

On the protection equipment which has been provided with the prevailing situation, Iangrai said that for now they have been able to provide the basic requirements like gloves, sanitizers, self-stitched masks and self-made PPE's.

Meanwhile, Dr. P Kharnari who is in charge of the isolation centre, said that the centre is well equipped adding that all the staff has been well briefed about the do's and don'ts. He said that they will be isolated for 14 days and if any of them shows symptoms they will be referred to the designated hospitals.

It may be mentioned that similar isolation centres have been set up by various other police units as well. This initiative of the Meghalaya Police will definitely ease the burden of the Health and Family Welfare department.
