Tura: In what may be mentioned as yet another case of mob violence and moral policing, a Garo woman and her lover who is not a Garo were allegedly beaten up by villagers under Tikrikilla PS in West Garo Hills, after they were allegedly caught together last night. The case came to light after one of the perpetrators involved in the heinous act of the thrashing posted photos of the couple on social media – which instantly went viral.

According to police sources, the couple was allegedly in a relationship which led to the villagers attacking them when they were caught together last night. The villagers apparently gave them a huge round of thrashing leaving them with swollen faces and injuries.

Interestingly, despite the severe beatings received which were apparent from their faces, medical records, after they were taken to the hospital showed only simple injuries. The two victims have refused to submit an FIR on the incident.

"They were caught and beaten up. However as they have not registered a case, we have suo moto cognizance and an investigation is currently on. The matter has also been informed to the Women's Commission," said superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar, while adding that the two have been discharged from the hospital yesterday itself.

None of the perpetrators in the incident however have been caught or identified and the police are on the lookout for information on them. Dr Kumar also confirmed that tracking of the social media post has begun though the post was taken down by the owner and the account deleted.
