SHILLONG: Riding on sympathy votes following the sudden demise of former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma, the National People's Party (NPP), has today nominated the former's youngest son and party president Conrad K Sangma to contest in the May 16 by-poll.
The central election committee of the party has today formally nominated Conrad to contest the by-poll.
Party spokesperson James K Sangma said the party has unanimously accepted the family decision to field Conrad in the by-election scheduled on May 16 next month.
With the congress party already nominating Mukul Sangma's wife and MLA Dikkanchi Shira as their nominee it looks like the two most prominent families from Garo Hills will yet again have a fight for supremacy in Garo Hills .
The BJP is yet to announce their candidate for the elections and while the state party leadership appears keen to fight the Lok Sabha polls there are indication that the BJP Central leadership may be keen not to put up a candidate against PA Sangma's son.
