Meghalaya: Inferno leaves 15 people homeless
SHILLONG: No sooner had they recovered from the onslaught of the cyclonic wind which struck the city recently, a massive inferno razed three houses to ashes at Pynthorbah on Monday afternoon leaving as many as 15 people homeless.
According to the police, the fire which started at around 2:45 pm killed one cow and engulfed 3 wooden houses belonging to Harbind P Singh, Surendra PD Rai and Rami Rai.
5-6 fire brigades were pushed to the site to help douse the flame. The inferno was finally brought under control at around 5.30 pm.
According to eye-witnesses, the fire started from a haystack- (cause uncertain) turned into an inferno engulfing 3 haystacks and spread to the nearby houses. The fire was fuelled by the haystack and the gas cylinder which blasted in one of houses, coupled with a strong wind, creating difficulty for the fire fighters to douse the flame.
Police informed that arrangements have been made for temporary relief. They are yet to ascertain the exact cost of damage. However, they say that the loss was heavy since all the three houses were reduced to ashes.
