Meghalaya: Door for Lapang in Congress is closed, says MPCC chief

By Our Reporter, TNT News | Shillong, Sept 24, 2018:

The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Dr Celestine Lyngdoh on Monday said that the decision of the AICC president, Rahul Gandhi to remove former Chief Minister Dr DD Lapang from the post of the MPCC president was totally 'justified'.

"The AICC had taken the right decision; how can a party go to Assembly polls in the State when its president is in and out of the hospital? During the height of our campaign not only Dr Lapang but even his wife was in the hospital. It was a stressful period for Dr Lapang and the AICC felt it proper to relieve him from the post of the MPCC chief," Dr Celestine said while addressing media persons at Congress Bhavan here today.

He further stated that AICC president, Rahul Gandhi always wanted to bring a new face in the party adding that he (Rahul) always wanted young leaders to be given an opportunity to serve the party in various positions.

Meanwhile, he said that it is a known fact that the Congress in Meghalaya is not in power.

"To accommodate senior members in a position where they can take care of themselves and serve the people of the State that does not arise. May be this could be one of the reasons that Dr Lapang has left the party," the MPCC chief said.

Informing that the party has accepted the resignation of Dr Lapang, he said that the party will no longer reconcile with the former Congress leader.

"The door for Lapang in the Congress is over," the MPCC chief said.

When asked whether the end of Lapang's journey with the Congress is bitter, he said that it will not be right to say that the end was a bitter.

"We must admit the fact that whatever positions that Dr Lapang had held in his political career is because of the Congress party. It was the Congress who made Dr Lapang five times Chief Minister of the State," Dr Celestine said.

The MPCC chief further said that if he (Dr Lapang) says that he would resign from active politics then the party would have felicitate him in a big way.

"He has decided the other way round all by himself. As the party, we are very thankful to the service rendered by Dr Lapang to the Congress. In fact, personally I am very thankful since through him and the Congress that Ri-Bhoi district came into being in 1992," he added.
