Meghalaya CM rejects demand to withdraw petition challenging Lokayukta order

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has rejected the demand of the opposition to withdraw the petition filed before the Meghalaya High Court against the order of the Meghalaya Lokayukta for a CBI probe into the coal racket.

Talking to reporters here today, Sangma said that they have filed the petition based on proper legal advise given by the Advocate General and Law department.

According to the Chief Minister, there are many areas where the provisions are not in line with the office of the Lokayukta in asking certain things adding that the rules and laws which are there does not permit on the points mentioned by the Lokayukta in the order.

To a question raised by the Opposition on the delay to constitute a full body of the Lokayukta, he said that the opposition does not need to show any concern on the matter since during their time they were not keen even to appoint the chairperson of the Lokayukta.

Clarifying the stand of the government on the issue, the Chief Minister said that there are many areas where the provisions are not in line with the Lokayukta in asking certain things and therefore based on those, petition has been placed that the Lokayukta laws and rules that are there don't permit certain aspects mentioned in the points.

He said that earlier they took years and years just to put up a chairman and the ruling now did not take even a year to put up a chairman; "that shows the commitment," he said.

On the accusation of facilitating a coal cartel levelled by the opposition, the Chief Minister said that the state government is simply going into this petition because the provisions under the Lokayukta is what they felt was not being followed and therefore the petition they filed is in regards to that. He claimed that it has nothing to do with any issue of coal mining as such.

It may be mentioned that based on complaints on rampant illegal transportation of coal and boulders, the Lokayukta had directed a CBI probe.
