Meghalaya cabinet approves State Education Policy 2018

What may be termed as one of the major decisions taken by the NPP-led MDA government in Meghalaya, the State cabinet on Friday approved the State Education Policy 2018, a decision taken after months of consultations and discussions with stakeholders.

"The policy took shape after a lot of deliberations and exhaustive work that include the suggestions of stakeholders," said Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui after the cabinet meet here today.

Rymbui said that the Meghalaya State Education Policy, 2018 tries to address the main issues and concerns faced by the State today and attempts to provide policy options for the State Government based on the best practices and research-driven interventions.

Stating that this is a 'big decision', the education minister said that the first draft Meghalaya State Education Policy, 2018 is based on a comprehensive analysis of the education sector in the State which evolved out of numerous consultations held with national and state level experts, practitioners, administrators and key stakeholders.

It may be mentioned that a 24-member Task Force on the Meghalaya State Education Policy was constituted in March 2018 by the Government to finalise the policy. The Task Force comprises of leading educationists. practitioners, current and retired educational administrators and key stakeholders in the State.

The First Task Force meeting was held on May 15 and further consultations took place on six other occasions. A total of 230 suggestions from various individuals, associations and organisations were received and scrutinized by the Task Force.

After incorporating all relevant suggestions, the Final Draft Education Policy was submitted to the Education Department on July 30.

The Final Policy covers the following broad areas: Vision, Overall Goal, Goals for the development of ECCE, Elementary, Secondary and Hr. Secondary, Higher and Teacher Education.
