Meghalaya: Biggest drug haul worth INR 3 crore made

SHILLONG: Custom sleuths on Tuesday made a seizure of heroine worth Rs 3 crore – the biggest so far in Meghalaya and arrested three persons in this connection.

According to the Deputy Commissioner customs, Issac Kharkongor, the seizure is the biggest so far in the state and that the preliminary investigations suggest that it may be for the retail dealers in the state.

Kharkongor informed that based on specific inputs the custom officials made the seizure from police bazaar area of the city and recovered 20,000 tablets of amphetamine along with the heroine and a 9 mm pistol. Kharkongor however did not reveal the identity of the three arrested persons citing that the investigation is on.

He further informed that the drugs might have come all the way from Thailand.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Police have recently invested on dogs which are currently undergoing training outside the State.

"The police department has purchased some of the most expensive dogs to curb the illicit drug supply in the State," SSP, CID, Claudia A Lyngwa informed during an awareness programme against drug abuse & illicit trafficking held recently.

As per statistics there are over 30,000 drug abusers in the state.
