Meghalaya: Assam MLAs want safe passage for migrant workers

The Congress MLAs from Assam have asked Meghalaya Government to give safe passage to the migrants labourers who are working in and around East Khasi Hills district.
The Congress MLAs from Assam led by Boko legislator, Nadita Das had wanted to meet Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma.
With the unavailability of the Chief Minister, the delegation of Congress MLAs met Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui and Leader of Opposition, Dr Mukul Sangma on Thursday evening.
The other Congress MLAs who were part of the delegation include Rupjyoti Kurmi and Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha.
Speaking to reporters, Das said that they have been informed that there are 1000 of migrant labourers from Assam are stuck in Shella under Sohra Civil Sub Division and other parts of East Khasi Hills.
"We want that the migrant labourers return to their home safely. The family members of the migrant labourers are concern about their safety since their mobile phones could not be reach," Das said.
She also said that more than 500 migrant workers from her Boko constituency are stranded in the State due to the prevailing law and order situation.
This was after a tense situation developed following the death of a Khasi Students' Union activist in an incident at Ichamati village on Friday last.
On the other hand, Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma said that recent lawlessness as a fallout of the incident Ichamati has vitiated the environment of peace and harmony in the State.
He said as per inputs, there are a substantial number of migrant workers from Assam who have been brought by contractors.
"Meghalaya and Assam are interdependent and the people are directly or indirectly interconnected. It is important for us to appreciate their initiative in reaching out to the government," the former Meghalaya chief minister said.
Meanwhile, All India Mahila Congress (AIMC) president, Sushmita Dev express her over the violence between the tribal and non-tribals groups in the State.
"It is unfortunate that one Jaddu Choudhury from Silchar, Assam has been seriously injured in the violence. There is a disturbing report about threats being made to Bengali speaking people to vacate their land which is extremely worrying," AIMC president stated in a letter address to Meghalaya Chief Minster recently.
She urged the Meghalaya Government to ensure the safety of all communities and specifically look at the threats about ousting people.
"I would also take this opportunity that any unrest in Meghalaya has an impact on the communication from Barak Valley to other parts of Assam. I hope you take necessary steps to maintain peace and traquility," Dev further added in the letter.
Curfew in all areas under Shella Police Station, Tyllap Police Outpost and Bholaganj Police Check Post, curfew has been relaxed with effect from 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. of Friday, and will be extended again from 2:00 P.M. of Friday until further orders.
