Meghalaya: AICC candidate list may land Mawryngkneng constituency’s David Nongrum in hot soup!
SHILLONG, January 28, 2018
As the state gears up for 2018 Assembly Elections scheduled to be held on February 27, political parties have begun fielding candidates and many have already announced the candidate list. The AICC on January 27 announced the candidate list amounting to 57 in number.
However, an important revelation from the list is this that Mawryngkneng MLA David Nongrum who contested the last election as an independent candidate has been named as a Congress candidate this year. But the sitting MLA has not yet resigned from the post until the filing of this report.
An official from the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly said that David Nongrum might be disqualified if any one made a complaint against him since his name has appeared as the Congress candidate but till date he had not resigned as the MLA even though he was an independent candidate.
It may be mentioned that the anti defection law will apply to him if he switches over to another party without resigning as MLA which is the case.
It may be mentioned that on December last, Nongrum had informed that he would officially join Congress probably in the first week of January 2018 even as he added that he was always a Congress man though he was denied a ticket in the 2013 Assembly polls. He informed that his father was also an MLA from the Congress.
David Nongrum was however not available for comments on this issue when TNT tried to contact him.
The Congress is yet to announce the names of candidates for three constituencies — South Shillong, Pynthorhumkhrah and Khliehriat.
