Meghalaya: 2 accused of witchcraft Sankhat village

SHILLONG: On accusation for practicing 'witchcraft', a single mother and her nine-year-old daughter from Sankhat village were ostracized by the village dorbar of Sankhat. The mother Ioris Khongjoh and her daughter were ostracize by the dorbar on March 15 by headman Hedrik Dhar, who and his secretary E Khongiong after a from one B Syrti who is also the resident of the village.  As part of the decision, the village dorbar directed that there will be complete cut of drinking water supply. Not only this, the village dorbar also threatened to burn down the house of Khongjoh.

However, in contrast to the decision of the dorbar, Khongjoh said that real reason Syrti had accused her of practicing 'witchcraft' to the Dorbar Shnong," was over a plot of land which Syrti had recently illegal encroached. 'He (Syrti) was unhappy since she had strongly objected to his attempt to illegally encroach into my land. I had bought the land from one Will Pohti of Ri- Bhoi for Rs 40, 000 for cultivation of arecanut in 2006," the victim alleged. She also said that he had also started construction work on my land." Khongjoh even brought to the notice of the village authority on the encroachment by Syrti. "But since I had kept the land documents with my sister who is staying in Shillong, I could not produce them in the Dorbar meeting," adding "Despite of requesting for one day time, the headman and secretary refused and directly declared their decision."

As per the decision of the dorbar, Khongjoh and her daughter had to leave the village due to fear after being threatened, they are now living with her elder sister in Shillong. SDO Amlarem JU Kharpuri after hearing the news has asked necessary information and a meeting with the victim before any further action on the matter.
