Massive rain storm hits Meghalaya badly; Hailstorms damage more than 2,000 houses!
SHILLONG, April 3: Hundreds of houses were damaged when heavy rains accompanied with hailstones and strong winds lashed Meghalaya, an official here said on Monday.
Several rooftops were blown away and houses were damaged by the hailstones. Many trees and electric poles were reportedly uprooted, disrupting power transmission.
As many as 1,500 houses falling under Umling, Umsning and Jirang community and rural development blocks in Ri Bhoi district were damaged in the hailstorm yesterday, the officials said, adding Umling, which has a population of over 6,000 people has reported the maximum number of damage in the incident. In south-west Khasi hills district, storms have damaged over 300 houses in 36 villages while 542 houses in 10 villages of east Khasi hills were also affected, officials added.
Internet service was also disrupted in some parts of Shillong city.
"There were reports of several houses getting damaged by the hailstones and the wind but no one was rendered homeless," Chief Secretary K.S. Kropha told newsmen
He said no casualty was reported from any part of the state.
Minor landslips were reported on Shillong-Tamabil road.
"Wherever there are reports of landslips, we are trying to clear the debris to ensure smooth movement of vehicles," a Public Work Department official said.
