There is a need for a collective effort to promote and protect child rights in the state, Manipur Minister for Social Welfare Henry Okram said at an event held at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal to commemorate Universal Children’s Day 2020 on Friday.

Speaking as the chief guest, Okram said that there is a need for mass awareness and advocacy campaigns on child rights across the state.

All stakeholders including officials of the department must work together for the welfare of the children, he said.

“We need to ensure that those children who are living in children’s homes and shelter homes being run by various NGOs are provided with better care and also protect their due rights,” he added.

The minister also urged the concerned officials to conduct regular inspections and to assess the condition of children and shelter homes across the state.

The event was organised by the Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights in collaboration with the State Child Protection Society and Child Protection for Services Scheme, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India and the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur.
