IMPHAL:

Candidate of the Indian National Congress (INC) from Saitu, Lamtinthang Haokip, who is contesting in the upcoming assembly by-election on November 7, has written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) demanding the disqualification of BJP candidate Ngamthang Haokip for allegedly involving proscribed group Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) for campaigning in his favour.

In a letter to ECI, Haokip said that KRA cadres are freely roaming in the Saitu Assembly constituency and campaigning for the BJP candidate.

The Congress candidate also claimed that the KRA, which is currently under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) with the Central and State government, made an attempt on his life recently.

They fired six rounds of bullets while I was campaigning at Kangchup Tuikun Village in Kangpokpi district on October 28, Haokip added.

Furthemore, he alleged that the KRA also physically assaulted a Congress sub-committee chairman, threatened six other Congress supporters on the same night and stopped INC supporters from organizing a public rally in Leimakhong area.

Haokip has also written to the returning officer of Saitu to take prompt action against the KRA for their attempt to disrupt the election campaign.
