Manipur police takes cognisance against man for killing cow with weapon

Officer-in-charge of Ukhrul police station, W. Marchang, has filed an FIR against one Wungshungmi Hungyo for killing a cattle by using a weapon which is punishable under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act in Manipur on Thursday.

The Officer-in-charge had filed an FIR following the complaint filed by the People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to the Superintendent of Police, Ukhrul.

A video of the accused shooting and killing a cow went viral on social media, following which the PETA had written to the Manipur police for action.

For the swift action taken up by the police, “PETA India commends the efforts of the Manipur police and thanks to them for their clear message that cruelty to animals will not be tolerated,” says PETA India Emergency Response Team Associate Manager, Meet Ashar.

“The trauma this cow must have gone through is hard to imagine,” he added.

A suo moto case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act has been registered by the Ukhrul Police based on the viral video, Marchang said.
