Manipur: New artificial turf in Imphal West to give an edge to young footballers

An artificial football turf was inaugurated at Langjing Achouba in Imphal West by the Chief Minister of Manipur N. Biren Singh on December 12.

“The new artificial football turf will benefit players and practitioners on all seasons, as playing in the natural football ground during raining season can get muddy,” the Chief Minister said.

Speaking about the diminishing football grounds in Imphal, he said that this new artificial turf would enable potential players to practise more diligently, facilitate and explore the talent of our young footballers to train in a world-class environment.

According to reports, this is the second artificial football turf in Manipur, which is fully funded by the Government of Manipur. The first artificial football turf is at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex funded by the All India Football Federation.

A football academy is in the offing when the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, Director of Youth Affairs & Sports, Manipur, Phulen Meitei said.

Manipur has been dominating in football for years with the state contributing, for instance, 43 players in the current Indian Super League and we want to promote football, he added.
