Manipur: Illegal smuggling through Indo-Myanmar border on the rise

IMPHAL:

Manipur has been witnessing an increase in smuggling activities originating out of Myanmar over the past one week.

On January 7, the Assam Rifles troops intercepted a convoy of five DI vehicles and a pickup going towards Imphal.

Upon interrogation, it was reported that the vehicles were carrying a bulk quantity of shoes and textile products illegally smuggled from Myanmar.


During a thorough search of the vehicles, a wide range of items were recovered.

The items seized included 51 packages of ladies’ garments, 34 packages of gents garments, 225 blankets, 180 bedsheets, 586 pairs of shoes, 900 coconuts, 100 LED bulbs and 300 plastic mats worth ₹ 2.39 crore were recovered.

The Assam Rifles team detained six individuals involved in the smuggling racket along with the vehicles.

The recovered items along with the detainees and vehicles have been handed over to the customs department for further investigation.
