Manipur Govt. provides aid to handloom & handicraft artisans

To support handlooms and handicrafts in Manipur, the Minister of Textiles, Commerce and Industry, Th. Biswajit Singh, gave away weaving products free of cost to encourage artisans, especially in times of hardship caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the Conference Hall of the new secretariat office, Th. Biswajit said, "Handloom and handicraft is our alternative to means of livelihood."

"The government has procured their furnished products as the weavers and artisans are facing acute hardship because of the lockdown."

Biswajit also spoke on the need to preserve the state's tradition by encouraging the handloom and handicraft products.

He also gave out a toll-free number (18005720906) to the artisans who wish to highlight their grievances to the government.

Others who attended the event include the Director of Handlooms and Textiles, K Lamlee Kamei and the Joint Director of Handlooms and Textiles, Manipur Shri E.Jiten.

The flagship programme is an initiative of the buy-back policy of the Central Government which procures handloom and handicraft products to support artisans and weavers in dire need.

It was mentioned that the weaving products have been lying unsold since March because of the lockdown.
