Manipur cheers as Amur Falcons begin to arrive in Tamenglong

Amur Falcons, locally known as 'Akhoipuina', have arrived in Manipur’s Tamenglong district. This particular bird is known for its capability to fly the longest distance in one go.

The Tamenglong Forest Division, in its Facebook post, had confirmed that the first batch of Amur Falcons has arrived in Tamenglong since October 9.

A. Romeshwor Singh, in-charge of Regional Forest Officer, Tousem in Tangmenglong district of Manipur said that the said birds not only help in pest control but it also helps in the pollination of varied plants and flowers.

The Amur Falcon is said to breed in East Asia and migrate to India, Sri Lanka, and sometimes to Thailand, Cambodia and then fly to the Arabian sea and reaches Southern Africa.

It is said that the birds going over to India are said to be aided by strong winds blowing westward. These winds are strong at an altitude of about 3000 m and the birds are thought to fly at a height of above 1000 m during migration.
