IMPHAL:

The Central leadership of the National People’s Party (NPP) arrived in Manipur on Thursday to campaign for their lone candidate Khuraijam Loken Singh, who is contesting the assembly by-polls from Wangoi constituency in Imphal West district.

The leaders include NPP national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Meghalaya cabinet minister James Sangma and NPP national general secretary Thomas Sangma.

While speaking at an event, the national president expressed confidence that the party will register a thumping victory in the constituency.

Referring to the NPP as the only national party from the Northeast, Conrad said that the NPP is the voice of the region.

Training his guns at BJP candidate, O. Lukhoi Singh, Sangma said a leader should put the people first, and everything would follow.

"Abandoning his assembly membership is not the leader that the Wangoi constituency deserves... Support the right candidate and the right party. Choose a leader who you trust, who will never fail the people," Conrad said.

Conrad's brother and Meghalaya cabinet minister, James PK Sangma also echoed similar views stating that it is an insult to the electorates that the constituency has to go for by-polls this way following the resignation of sitting MLA O. Lukhoi.

It is sad to know that Manipur is in the lamplight for its political instability, he added.

The event was also attended by the four sitting MLAs of NPP in Manipur -- Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Y. Joykumar Singh, Minister of irrigation and flood control Letpao Haokip, President of NPP Manipur Unit N. Kayisii and former health minister L. Jayantakumar Singh.

Manipur is scheduled to go for by-polls in four assembly constituencies on November 7.
