IMPHAL:

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, on Wednesday, stated that including the Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category is a process that may take time depending on the reports submitted by an expert committee.

Singh made the statement while addressing the 12th session of the 11th Assembly.

“Inclusion of Meiteis in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list requires a thorough examination with inputs from experts,” Singh said.

While admitting that the Meiteis need protection and that the matter needs to be deliberated, Singh said the Centre has already given the Inner Line Permit (ILP) to protect the people of the state.

“It is a tricky situation, as it is not a unanimous demand. Some people have a different opinion about including Meiteis in the ST list,” Singh added.

Singh also highlighted the importance of ST status for the community and stated that he sought time from the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee to arrive at a solution.
