Illegal cross-border smuggling on the rise in Manipur

IMPHAL:

Troops from Assam Rifles in a coordinated operation intercepted a large convoy of vehicles carrying smuggled foreign origin textiles and consumer goods near Moreh in Indo-Myanmar border on November 11.

Fifteen vehicles moving on NH 102 were said to have been intercepted and on checking, many Chinese textile goods such as fabrics, jeans, dresses, blankets and consumer goods such as footwear were found with no legal documents.

The smuggled goods is said to be worth ₹ 75 lakhs.

The twenty six individuals transporting the illegal goods and the vehicles along with the recovered items were handed over to Moreh Police for further legal action.

The press release from the Assam Rifles stated that it was causing a loss to the government exchequer as the goods were being smuggled through the porous Indo-Myanmar border paying no customs duty.
