The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM), on Monday, said that it would resume the suspended 48-hour bandh from November 5 and also ban the construction of all ongoing national projects in the state.

According to sources, they decided to resume the bandh after the state government failed to act upon the agreement reached on October 25 over timely elections to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs).

ATSUM deferred the bandh for ten days after reaching an agreement with the state government on October 25.

“The failure of the government to comply with the agreement prompted the union to call for a 48-hour bandh in the state from November 5,” said ATSUM president Seiboi Haokip.

The union also informed that all emergencies and essential services could function during the bandh.

It also further stated that an indefinite bandh would follow suit if the state government failed to meet their demand for holding timely ADC elections.

We may note that the union has been demanding the state government to hold the ADC election after the extended term of the ADC ends on November 30.

The ADC elections were supposed to be held in June, however, the state government extended the term of the ADC for another six months till the end of November.
