Ahongbam Bemthoi Chanu, notable face of Manipuris in Assam, passes away

Ahongbam Bemthoi Chanu, who is said to be one of the most notable faces of the Manipuri community in Assam, has passed away on December 15 following a brief illness because of multiple organ failure.

Bemthoi, an ACS (Assam Civil Service, 2015 batch) was said to be posted as a Magistrate at the Bokajan Sub-division of the Karbi Anglong district in Assam when her health deteriorated.

Known as one of the most honest and dedicated officers, Ahongbam Bemthoi Chanu’s performance during the National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation in Bokajan sub-division is said to be praiseworthy.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh condoled saying that he is “Anguished by the demise of the Assam Civil Service officer.”

Former Education Minister Th. Radheshyam expressed his shock saying, “The cruel hand of nature has snatched away Ahongbam Bemthoi Chanu from us at a young age. She was posted to Bokajan Subdivision of the Karbi Anglong district as a Magistrate and passed away today. Fondly known among her peers as one of the most honest and a dedicated officer, Chanu joined the Assam Civil Service in 2015.”

Ahongbam Bemthoi Chanu is said to be married to Okram Prasanta Singh, an RTI activist based in Guwahati.
