In an event that is the first of its kind in Ukhrul, the youths celebrated the United Nations International Youth Day today (a day later than the date set by the UN) by taking to the streets and parading through the town in a jovial and triumphant mood.
Organised by IGSSS and Ura Trust, more than 30 upcoming companies of the town were part of the event. Around a thousand youths from different walks of life were present at the colourful parade with vibrant dresses, flags, hand bands and face paintings.
The parade kicked off at Mission Ground, Alungtang and was led by Hao Riders, a bikers' group from Ukhrul; the youths present paraded till the Town Hall.
Performances such as dancing, singing, football skill shows etc. lighted up the parade as the youths pleaded for change and peace in the town.
Speaking at the event, the organisers talked about how Ukhrul is always portrayed as a violent and negative town. Rallies, bandhs and demonstrations occur year round in the town protesting various agendas and actions.
"We want to show Ukhrul in a different light: we want people here and elsewhere to understand that Ukhrul isn't all about negativity. We want to show the positivity of the youths in our town. This parade is a celebration of youth and life." quoted one of the organisers.
