Manipur: Weightlifting coach Golden Thanga suspended for physical assault of trainee

September 22, 2017: In connection with the physical assault of a weightlifting trainee, representatives of JAC against the physical assault, Oinam Sports Association and various CVO's met the regional director of Sports Authority of India, North Eastern Regional Centre (SAI-NERC) today.

A release said the convener of the JAC, Mutum Roma Devi led the other organisations to meet the regional director of SAI-NERC, Francis Marwein at the office chamber of the director at Takyelpat.

After a lengthy meet, Francis Marwein committed that the Sh. Golden Thanga, the weightlifting coach who has been alleged of physical assault of his trainee, will be officially discontinued from his post of SAI on or before 1 pm of September 22.

The regional director made the commitment in front of the representatives of the JAC, CSO's, assistant director of SAI, Thang and second OC of Nambol Police Station, Baite, it added.

According to the release, Golden Thanga assaulted one of his trainees named Oinam Tondonba Singh from Oinam Mamang Leikai during a training session at SAI (SAG) Utlou on September 2.

The coach is currently serving at SAI (SAG) Utlou on contract basis, which will be ended by September 30. Earlier on September 19, the regional director had sent a request to the national director (Coaching), posted at New Delhi to discontinue Golden Thanga from his present post and also to stop him from further extension of his contract.

In view of the agreement, the indefinite bandh along Tiddim Road of National Highway-150 called by the JAC will be relaxed without further dates. However, the other democratic forms of protest will still go on until the commitment by the regional director is materialised, said the release.

Golden Thanga has been booked under Section 325 of IPC with an FIR under Nambol Police Station in the assault case by the families of Oinam Tondonba.
