Manipur to boast of National Sports University

In another major boost to development in Northeast India, Manipur is all set to own a National Sports University as informed recently by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) during his address at a function organised to celebrate the famous Manipuri social festival Ningol Chakkouba. The news comes nearly a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first ever visit to Manipur where he announced the setting up of a sports university sometime in the future.

Manipur has proven itself as one of the most successful Indian states in the field of sports with the highest number of medal winners found here. Reports suggest that the location for setting up the multi-crore university will be at the Integrated Sports Complex at Khuman Lampak, Imphal. Manipur boasts of some of India's biggest sporting names across a variety of disciplines including Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom, Bombayla Devi Laishram, Sanjita Khumukcham, Mirabai Chanu Saikom, Ngangbam Soniya Chanu, Bidyananda Singh, Kothajit Singh Khadangbam, and Jackichand Singh to name a few.

The National Sports University will allow enhancement of sports in the region as sports-enthusiastic youths will be given the opportunity to pursue professional courses such as B.PEd, MPEd, Diploma courses, certificate courses in coaching, physiotherapy, fitness, sports management, and sports journalism.
