IMPHAL: Team Shirui emerged victorious over the United States Polo Association(USPA) during the finals of the first Manipur Statehood Day Women's Polo Tournament.
The event was held on Thursday at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest living polo ground in Imphal.
Shirui defeated USPA by a margin of 6-5 goals. The 5 days women polo tournament is being held to commemorate the diamond anniversary after a gap of 22 years in a move to promote women's polo in India.
For the tourney 5-member USPA team including four young lady players with the help from the International Committee and Polo Development embarked in Imphal, the birth place of polo.
Soon after the arrival, they were introduced to Manipuri polo ponies and conducted a day long clinic cum practice session along with Manipuri women polo players.
According to L Somi Roy of Hun-tré! Adventures,event management partner of the International tourney, the women USPA team, the first International women polo team visiting India include Cristina Fernandez, Tiamo Hudspeth, Carly Persano and Julia Smith who will be representing Team USPA in Manipur and Jaipur India.
The trip which is jointly organized by Steve Armour of Houston Polo Club, Edward Armstrong of USPA International committee and Hun-tré and support of Manipur tourism department will conclude with an exhibition match in Jaipur on January 24.
