Manipur: State govt to publish Indian Constitution in Manipuri

IMPHAL: The Indian Constitution which is be considered to be important and sacred for a free democracy allowing a viable smooth functioning of the country. Manipur's Directorate of Printing & Stationery has taken up a project to translate the Indian Constitution in Manipuri language.

The Seventy-first Amendment of the Constitution of India, officially known as The Constitution (Seventy-first Amendment) Act, 1992, amended the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution so as to include Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali languages, thereby raising the total number of languages listed in the schedule to eighteen. The Eighth Schedule lists languages that the Government of India has the responsibility to develop.

While addressing a press conference in Imphal, Assistant Director Tijam Devananda said that the directorate has plans to print updated Manipur Gazettes, the directorate is equipped with modern machineries for printing including UV curving machine that gives dynamic effects of print product after printing like 3D effects. The directorate undertakes only printing, binding and publication works. He added that standardized forms, gazettes, magazines, pamphlets, brochures, posters etc for the state government departments and Central government departments are printed by the directorate.

The government press, Manipur was established as State Printing Press in 1919 after passing a resolution in the Manipur State Darbar in 1918. Later it was upgraded to a full-fledged Directorate of Printing & Stationery, Manipur on July 25, 1979

Regarding upgradation of the directorate building, he said there has been restrictions from the government authority although the directorate was able to collect non tax revenue amounting to Rs 10.02 lakhs for the year 2015-16 against the target of Rs 3.46 lakhs fixed by the government and Rs 8.92 lakhs for the current year 2016-17 (till date). He added that the department managed to collect Rs 17.65 lakhs in non-tax revenue collection for the year 2014 – 2015 against the target of Rs. 8.40 lakhs.
