IMPHAL, October 29, 2018: Manipur was crowned as the overall champions of the first edition of North East Olympic Games which concluded on Sunday.
The closing ceremony was held in Imphal's Khuman Lampak main stadium where Manipur's deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh, state education minister — who is also the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Games and president of Manipur Olympic Association Th. Radheshyam Singh and revenue minister Karam Shyam distributed trophies to the winning teams.
Manipur secured a total of 159 medals including 80 Gold, 48 Silver and 31 Bronze medals at the Games followed by Assam which secured a total of 140 medals including 46 Gold, 53 Silver and 41 Bronze medals. Arunachal Pradesh bagged the third spot securing 18 Gold, 20 Silver and 38 Bronze medals a total of 76 medals in the Games.
Athletes from the eight northeastern states competed in 12 different disciplines at the five-day sporting event that began on October 24.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, the deputy Chief Minister of Manipur said that the North East Olympic Games will definitely help to build friendship and maintain cordial relations among the northeastern states. "We have a unique history of commonness in terms of culture, tradition, food habits and way of life and that is why the states are called as sisters," he said.
Although Manipur, to a certain extent, maybe the powerhouse of sports, other northeastern states are also picking up the pace in the field, he added.
The deputy CM appealed to the coaches and managers of the region to train the young players and prepare them for international competitions. Education minister Th. Radheshyam Singh termed the first North East Olympic Games as 'historic'.
Asserting that the Games is a perfect ground for budding sportspersons of the region, he urged the state Olympic Associations to work together in fulfilling the aspirations of the sportsperson.
The second edition of North East Olympic Games will be held in Arunachal Pradesh in 2019.
