Manipur | MUSU announces 48-hour state-wide strike following protest violence

IMPHAL, July 17, 2018: The Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) has announced a 48-hr state-wide general strike to be launched today at midnight upto July 19 midnight.

M Dayaman, speaking to reporters at MUSU office said that there will be no compromise except for the ouster of VC AP Pandey.

"Despite our democratic protests, the authorities concerned remain indifferent to our demands. Our primary demand is the removal of the vice-chancellor to be followed by a high-level independent inquiry committee. As our demand is being ignored, we have no choice but to step up our protests," he said.

While appealing other like minded student bodies and civil organisations of the state to support the 48-hour strike, Dayaman said that the bandh will exempt essential services related to health, media and other religious matters.

The announcement took place amidst protests where seven students including the secretary general of Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) were injured when police tried to disperse students who were storming towards Raj Bhavan and BJP Manipur office shouting slogans for removal of MU vice-chancellor Adiya Prasad Pandey.
