A man was lynched on suspicion of being a vehicle thief in Tharoijam Awang Leikai in Manipur's Imphal West district.

The man succumbed to his injuries after an enraged mob thrashed him on Thursday morning.

Two companions of the deceased managed to escape from the scene which saw locals burning down the car driven by the suspected vehicle lifters.

According to the locals, the suspected vehicle lifters came inside the 'Sangoi' (a shed) to steal the vehicle early morning at about 3:30 am.

Alarmed by dog barks and noise outside, the family members went out only to find that one of the three persons was found trying to carry a scooter, a family member claimed. The members then shouted to raise an alarm in the area.

It is said that the scooter is recently bought and the vehicle is yet to be registered.

On seeing the villagers, the three reportedly left the two-wheeler and tried to drive away in the car. The trio allegedly met with an accident in the paddy field nearby. Two of them managed to escape but the deceased was rounded up by the villagers.

The deceased is a Muslim youth from Lilong in Thoubal district and was badly beaten by villagers. He succumbed to his injuries on the spot. The villagers then proceeded to burn the car the trio were in.

The police have since registered a case on the matter.
