GUWAHATI | August 20, 2018:

Jadav Payeng, also known as the forest man of Assam, got a mention in textbooks of  Maharashtra School Board.

He has been mentioned in Environmental Science book for Class X in context of the environment. The content of the book had mentioned his life experiences and contribution under the heading 'The big story of a small man'.

However, an error was seen on the part of the publisher where it has been mentioned that Payeng belongs to a nomadic tribe instead of Mishing tribe.

According to Wikipedia, the Mishings are indigenous tribal community inhabiting 11 districts of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. They were earlier called Miris in historical days and the Constitution of India still refers to them as Miris.

Padma Shri Jadav 'Molai' Payeng is an environmental activist and forest worker from Jorhat. Over the course of past several years, he planted and tended trees on a sandbar of the river Brahmaputra turning it into a forest reserve.
