Japan keen to invest in developmental projects in Northeast India

Ambassador of Japan to India, Kenji Hiramatsu on Monday said that Japan is keen to invest in Northeast India particularly in the field of food processing, infrastructure development projects even as he maintained that the region has a wide range of possibilities and business opportunities.

Hiramatsu was in Shillong to pay a courtesy visit to the Governor of Meghalaya, Ganga Prasad at Raj Bhavan, Shillong today.

"We attach great importance to the development of the North east and we talked about the possibility of all cooperation especially in the field of food processing, infrastructure development and business opportunities and we are encouraging Japanese business community on the possibility to do business here," said Hiramatsu while taking to newsmen here on Monday.

Referring to the various developmental projects that Japan is venturing into in India, the Japanese Ambassador said the work for the country's first high speed bullet train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is on track and exuded confidence that will be completed by the year 2023.

Pointing out that the region shares a lot of similarities with Japan culturally, Hiramatsu said,"We would like to see more cooperation not only in business but also in people to people exchanges encourage more exchanges as we more in common with regard to culture hope to see more cultural exchange taking place in the near future".

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Governor, Ganga Prsad said that Meghalaya is seeking the support of Japan in transferring appropriate technology for developing the strawberry planting material in the state considering the growing demand of Meghalaya strawberries.

The Governor, earlier in a note addressed to the Japan Ambassador, stated that Japan is the world leader in Shiitake Mushroom production and in the past had collaborated with the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University and the similar gesture if extended to Meghalaya, will benefit immensely as it has what it takes for undertaking the mushroom cultivation.
