IN PICTURES: Assam bandh brings life to a standstill
More than 200 protesters across the state were arrested during the 12-hour bandh declared by 11 organisations. These organisations including AJYCP, Karbi Sudents' Union, Matat Students' organisation who staged their protest against Centre's decision on giving shelter to minority refugees in the country.
The bandh affected normal life in Guwahati, Lakhipur, Sonitpur, Morigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji district, etc. All business centres were closed during the bandh and streets wore a deserted look.
Police arrested 18 protesters from Thalemara of Sonitpur while they were blocking the roads. Likewise, 40 were arrested in Biswanath Chariali, 20 in Margherita, 5 in Hojai, 95 in Kalaigaon.
On the other hand, organisations like Bengali Youth Federation, BJP Yuva Morcha have simultaneously staged protest against the organisation who have opposed Centre's decision on giving shelter to minority refugees coming to India till 31st December, 2014.
They burnt the effigy of Akhil Gogoi, leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samitee which has been on a 30 hour long protest state-wide against the decision.
The Bengali Youth Federation also took out a massive bike rally in Chirang district of lower Assam against the bandh.
BJP Yuva Morcha also staged a protest in Hojai against those opposing centres' decision on sheltering minority refugees.
