In a bid to boost tourism, a towering Buddhist golden pagoda was inaugurated in Pangsaung town of Myanmar near the India-Myanmar border on Tuesday.

Set atop a small hillock, the pagoda offers a view of the famous Lake of No Return visible in the valley below. Tourists will be able to visit the golden pagoda which is located a distance of 12 km from Nampong town in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. It is the last town on the Indian side.

Both towns are connected by the Stilwell Road built by US General Joseph Stilwell aka Vinegar Joe during World War II.

A ministerial team of the Southeast Asian nation participated in the inauguration ceremony which was attended by hundreds of locals. The sacred ceremony took place amidst the holy chanting of Buddhist monks attired in golden yellow robes. A small delegation from Arunachal Pradesh was also invited to the ceremony.

On the 10th, 20th and 30th of each month, Indians are allowed inside Myanmar upto Pangsaung town, where people usually go to visit the Lake of No Return and shop at the famous Pangsaung roadside market which sells artifacts, handicrafts and other local wares.
