Meghalaya Home Minister James K Sangma on Tuesday said that with the supposed 'downfall' of the once dreaded militant outfit – Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), it will be difficult for its ally — United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA I) to have a footing in the region.

"Definitely the GNLA all said and done were from Garo Hills and it is very difficult for the ULFA to find any kind of footing in the Garo Hills region," said James Sangma while speaking to media persons after the cabinet meet in the city here on Tuesday.

"The downfall of GNLA will definitely have an impact on the ULFA," James said adding that the with GNLA losing all its senior cadres, "We are hopeful that those of the lower ranks are in the process of coming overground and surrendering and the process is going on."

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that while dreaded militant outfit GNLA is almost neutralised, the state government is not taking any chances and the state Home Department is on alert.

"Most of the GNLA leaders have been neutralised but still we have to be alert and the Home Department is very alert and not taking any chances," said Conrad.

Talking about HNLC, the Home Minister said that the stand of the government is very clear on the issue which is no talks until they shun the path of violence.
