GANGTOK, April 29, 2018: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling is creating a new political history in India on April 28 as the longest serving Chief Minister. He will be taking the record to another distance given that there is still one year more to go in his fifth term as the Chief Minister of Sikkim.

Chamling had first taken office as the Chief Minister of Sikkim on December 12, 1994. Since then, he has led his Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) to successive electoral victories for five terms in the State.

West Bengal Chief Minister Late Jyoti Basu so far was the longest serving Chief Minister in Indian political history. Basu was the Chief Minister of West Bengal for five terms from June 21, 1977 to November 6, 2000. However, he did not complete his fifth term due to health reasons and handed over the charge to Buddhadeb Bhattacharya.
That record would be broken on April 28 by Chamling as the longest serving Chief Minister in Indian politics.

In an exclusive talk with SIKKIM EXPRESS, Chamling credited the record as the longest serving Chief Minister in India to the people of Sikkim.

"Definitely, I am personally happy with this record. At the same time, I extend my thanks to the people of Sikkim for this record. This would have not been possible without the faith, belief and support of the people of Sikkim. The credit for this goes to the people of Sikkim," said Chamling.

Chamling mentioned that there would not be grand celebrations on attaining the record as the longest serving Chief Minister in India. We are thinking of celebrating it in a low profile manner, he said.
