Naaz Sultana, a Guwahati based singer, songwriter and composer, has slowly but steadily been rising up in the popularity charts in Assam as an indie musician who lets hear heart guide her voice. After coming out with her debut release Xikoli in December last year, Naaz has recently released another single called Porisoy.

Whereas Xikoli talked about personal contradictions between the external image and internal dialogue, Porisoy is a more politically inclined song that traces the importance of cultural identity in a person's life. Written in the backdrop of the introduction of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 in the Parliament, Porisoy also delves into the cultural violence, mob lynching and acts of terrorism which have directly affected the Assamese identity at a macro as well as micro level.

"It came to my mind because there was a lot of disturbance happening in the state" says Naaz about the song. The passion and raw emotional drive behind it is evident from the fact that Porisoy was written and recorded by her in the duration of a single day.

"This song is basically about how the identity of the people of Assam is being hampered and this is similar to the circumstances which led to the Assamese movement of 1972." she adds while saying that "The song speaks about the individual lives of the people and how events like the serial bomb blasts in Guwahati or the mob lynching in KarbiAnglong have affected every single Assamese household".

Naaz has infused the moving and emotional subject matter of the song with somber yet stirring undertones using western influences in conjunction with her Assamese lyrics. She says that her intention with Porisoy is to do her part as an artist in lending her voice in support of the struggle that is currently underway to preserve the honor of Assamese identity.
