Assam’s Baghjan oil field goes up in flame; CM apprises Union Petroleum Minister

GUWAHATI | JUNE 09, 2020:

In Assam, a massive fire broke out, engulfing a natural-gas producing well of Oil India Limited (OIL) in Tinsukia district, which has reportedly been leaking gas for the last 14 days.

Following the incident, Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal apprised the Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan about the incident. The state government has also requested Air Force and the Army to help douse the fire.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in the area and officials from Assam are also reviewing the situation. Teams from the Indian Air Force were also pushed into action.

Assam's oil well at Baghjan Tinsukia, which is about 500 kilometres from Guwahati, had a blowout on May 27 and has been leaking gas for the past 14 days, causing grave damage to the region's wetlands and biodiversity, sources said.
