Twenty critically endangered vultures found dead in Assam

DIBRUGARH:

Twenty critically endangered vultures died after consuming carrion (the decaying flesh of dead animals) at Sadiya sub-division in upper Assam Tinsukia district on Monday.

The villagers of Ghormora, Kabibagan of Sadiya, informed the forest officials about the incident after they found the dead vultures on the field.

Sources said the forest officials rushed to the spot and found twenty dead vultures and eight vultures in critical condition.

They sent the eight vultures for treatment and the dead vultures for postmortem at Tinsukia.

“It is an unfortunate incident. The population of vultures is declining at a rapid pace. Some people still poisoned the cattle to kill dogs and other creatures, but vultures died. We should conserve the vultures because vultures play a crucial role to maintain the balance of eco-system,” said Bijay Gogoi, a Tinsukia based environmentalist.
