GUWAHATI:

Six people died, and two others were critically injured in a vehicular accident on National Highway-37 near Lepetkata in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh district on Thursday, police said.

Sources at Barbaruah police station told this correspondent that the passengers were on their way to Bhogamur at Lepetkata in a Mahindra Bolero after attending a marriage ceremony at Silapathar in Dhemaji district in the wee hours of Thursday.

“However, the Bolero hit the rear of a stationary trailer parked beside the highway around 5:30 am today. We suspect the driver lost sight of the parked trailer due to the heavy early morning fog in the area and crashed into the stationary vehicle,” a police officer said.

Police identified the deceased as Hem Bora, Madan Bora, Jibak Saikia, Prakash Das, Deba Bora and Konpai Bhuyan.

“Six persons died on the spot while two (of the) injured were taken to the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh town. They are seriously injured and undergoing treatment,” he said.
