Police bust ULFA recruitment module; seven from three Assam districts arrested

GUWAHATI:

In a breakthrough ahead of Magh Bihu and Republic Day, Assam Police have during a week-long operation, busted a recruitment and extortion module suspected to be of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) (I) and arrested seven individuals associated with the outfit including recruiters and linkmen.

Three were arrested from Darrang district, two from Udalguri district and two from Guwahati in Kamru (Metro district). The arrests were made in the past three to four days.

Sources said that the modus operandi of the arrested persons was to target youths from economically disadvantaged sections and lure them into joining the outfit after training them in Myanmar.

“Based on the interrogation of three recruiters arrested in Darrang district, we have arrested two more ULFA members in Udalguri and two more, one of them a member of pro-talks ULFA, was arrested in Guwahati. The arrests have been possible after multi-district operations against the outfit from December 30, 2020,” Darrang SP Amrit Bhuyan said on Friday.

“We have managed to get valuable inputs from the arrested persons who confessed to having carried out their recruitment and extortion activities in the state for three months now,” Bhuyan added.

Further interrogation revealed that the seven arrested men had direct links with senior ULFA leaders in Myanmar.

Police also seized mobile phones and extortion letters from the arrested persons during the operation.
