GUWAHATI:

Meritorious girl students in Assam were awarded scooters under the ‘Pragyan Bharati’ Scheme during a programme organised by the higher education department at Amingaon in Kamrup district on Sunday.

Under the Banikanta Kakaty Merit Award scheme, girl students who passed the higher secondary examination for the year 2020 in the first division would get scooters.

In Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) district, 22,034 scooters and 211 battery-powered scooters would be provided to 22,245 girl students at an estimated cost of Rs 144.30 crore.

Congratulating the students, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said the scooters would carry the success stories of the girls in every nook and corner of the state.

He said the scheme would transform the lives of many students, boosting their self-confidence and inspiring many more to take up studies seriously.

State education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government launched the Banikanta Kakaty Merit Award in 2017-18 and presented scooters to 1,000 girl students who secured first division.

“However, in 2018-19 and 2019-20, the award could not be presented due to several reasons, he said.

“The government has now decided to give away the scooters to the meritorious girl students of that period in February next year which would benefit 5000 and 10000 girl students respectively,” Sarma added.
