In a breakthrough achieved as part of the intensified drive against illegal weapons and “anti-national elements” in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Assam Police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a vehicle at Nasraibil village under Gossaigaon police station in Kokrajhar district on Tuesday evening, police sources here confirmed on Wednesday.
The police have apprehended six persons who were in the vehicle.
A police team from Saraibil police outpost (under Gossaigaon police station), led by sub-inspector Mithun Taye, intercepted a vehicle (Mahindra Scorpio) after receiving information that some miscreants, were moving around Nasraibil area with arms/ammunition and explosives in the vehicle (registration number AS-16A-4165).
Sources said the police team carried out a search inside the vehicle and recovered five AK-56 rifles with eight magazines, one Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) with 11 shells, one HK (Heckler & Koch) 33E rifle with one magazine, eight Chinese hand grenades and a huge cache of AK-56 ammunition along with BP pouches, five mobile handsets, blankets, plastics, toothbrushes, etc.
The six persons apprehended have been identified as Snmanjay Basumatary, Rabinath Narzary, Pungka Basumatary, Mwktang Basumatary and Manipal Mushahary—all from Kokrajhar district and Swmkwr Basumatary from Sonitpur district.
“Further interrogation is on,” police said.
